From the Morning - Nick Drake

I seem to be in a retro kick, similar to Andrew. What can I say about Nick Drake? Grandfather of folk. Drake never gained much fame during his lifetime, partly due to his refusal to perform live or give interviews. His three albums didn’t sell more than 5,000 copies, but Drake was an innovator with guitar techniques and spent a lot of time on his lyrics. An insomniac and clinically depressed, he died at the age of 26, two years after Pink Moon was released. Despite this, he gain post-humorous fame and rightly so.

If you’ve been following the Saturday posts, you know I’m a sucker for lyrics. I’m sure that there are other, more poetic songs but the way the music and the words fit together are so perfect.

Unicorn Kid - Boys Of Paradise

Chiptune - a genre of music that sounds like being a child again and playing your gameboy while on LCD and ecstasy simultaneously.

That is the Webster’s Dictionary definition. Look it up. There was something I wanted to say here… oh right! Happy 2012, everyone! I chose tonight’s song based on an experience I had earlier this week. Now when I say experience I mean it in the “earbuds in place, iPod on loud, eureka moment” sense. This song took me from an emotion I could only describe as miserable to one that was basically like being a child again and playing my Gameboy while on LSD and ecstasy simultaneously. Go figure that when I looked up chiptune I would find such a fitting definition.

Anyway, I want to start Soundboard off nicely this year. I just looked back through our archives to see what my first post of 2011 was (it wasn’t one of my greatest choices so I’m choosing not to link to it) and it’s so great seeing those posts by me and my fellow panelists again. So here’s to the year 2012: a year that rolls off of the tongue much better than 2011!

Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism

Oh gosh, the Deathcab and good old Cutie. It has been quite some time since I gave them a good listen. There’s a unique feeling I get from listening to this particular album, Transatlanticism, which I did last night.

I’m sure plenty of you have pretty fond memories to accompany this album too (I’m presumptuous; sue me) so I’m gonna leave this one short and sweet so you can fill in your own blanks. Hopefully there’s someone one out there keeping you warm. That’s right… I’m trying to make you sad.
